How to Start a Food Blog

Love to cook? Want to showcase your recipes to the entire world? Why not start a food blog?

Also I have received multiple queries related to starting a blog. So I thought why not write a post for it

In this post I will explain how to start your blog.

The three things that you need to get started are as below

1) Domain Name and Hosting
2) WordPress
3) A Theme

 1) Domain Name and Hosting

Lets understand what do you mean by domain and hosting.
Domain Name is a name by which your blog would be known over the internet. Brainstorm and choose a name which is suitable for your niche and contains a keyword. Also it should be easy to remember.
Like I have chosen and bought the domain indiasrecipe.com which matches my Indian recipes niche.

Hosting is nothing but a rented space for your blog. You need to choose from a different hosting providers.
Once you have decided the domain name you can get it free with your Bluehost Hosting plans or you can purchase it on GoDaddy and then connect it to your hosting.

There are many hosting companies which provide you Hosting like BlueHost, Dreamhost and Hostgator which are good in their services.  Hostgator provides good support and their plans are also good.  You can use the coupon code IndiasRecipe25 to avail 25 % discount.

Hostgator is also available in India now. Below are the different Hosting plans.  You can also purchase domain from Hostgator. I have bought the Hatchling plan for India’s recipe.

Bluehost is also a trusted provider of hosting services and they too provide 24/ 7 support.
Choose a plan that suits your need and your commitment to blogging.

Below is the comparison of the plans with the pricing for both Hostgator and BlueHost.

2) WordPress:

I would recommend using WordPress as the content management platform.  There are two versions for WordPress, self hosted and hosted one. The hosted version i.e. WordPress.com means you are hosting your website with wordpress, which means the website address would be always have yourdomain.wordpress.com. If you are very serious about blogging, I would suggest to go for WordPress Self hosted version.

Having a self hosted website gives you more control and more flexibility.

Once you have bought space on any of the hosting platform, you can then install wordpress as blogging software. You can also download the latest version of WordPress from https://wordpress.org/.

Most of the hosting providers have the option of One Click WordPress install.  I will guide you through the steps for Hostgator, since my blog has been with Hostgator and I have done this installation myself.

For Hostgator below are the steps:

1) Login to your cPanel with the credentials.

2) On the left side you can see the “QuickInstall WordPress for your Site” or Quick Install Link inside the Software / Services section. Click on any of these links.

3) Select WordPress as the Blog Software.

4) Click on Continue button

5) Fill the application URL ie where you want the wordpress to be installed. If wordpress will be used for your main website, leave this field blank. If you want the website address to be like  www.mydomainname.com/blog then use blog in the field.

Fill the other required details like email, name etc.

Please note that the admin password would be emailed to the email address that you provide here.

After filling all the detail click on Install Now button.

6) The wordpress software would then be installed and you would get a Congratulations message indicating the same. The admin password would be sent to the email address that you mentioned.

7) You can now login with the admin credentials. Append your URL with wp-admin and login.i.e.  www.yourdomainname.com/wp-admin

3)  Themes:

Themes are nothing but some styles to enhance the look and feel of your blog. There are both free themes which you can google and download from different sites.  Choose a theme which suits your need and also your blog.

The other popular two premium themes are Genesis and Thesis. I haven’t used either but am planning to move to Genesis. The biggest advantage of Genesis over Thesis, is that they are responsive designs meaning the controls and the blog adjust to different screen resolutions like ipad, mobile etc.  But the drawback of Genesis, is that you need to be technically strong enough to understand and design the pages.

Thesis themes are good and they also provide very good support. If you do not have any technical knowledge you should go for the Thesis themes.

Also there are other premium wordpress themes which you can get over the internet use for your blog.

Food Blogging Resources

Also there is online help and community which can help you with food blogging, Food Blogger Pro which was started by successful food bloggers Lindsay and Bjork who is the couple behind the Pinch of Yum blog.  You can Start and grow your food blog with Food Blogger Pro.
